The list expressed by the US Department of Commerce (USTR) will be enforceable at the end of February: it is urgent that the European Union respond to the requests of the Minister for Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies, Teresa Bellanova. Giovanni Mantovani, reports the threat of expanding the list of products with potential additional duty, including among others Italian wine, oil and pasta. The concern is enormous, as real, just think that, also thanks to the stocks accumulated in the previous months, the French still wines subjected to the 25% extra-duty registered a drop in sales in the US of 36% in value in the month alone in November compared to the same monthly period for the same period 2018. At the same time, the Vinitaly Nomisma Wine Monitor Observatory indicates Italy with a growth of the month of almost 10%.

Domestic production will not be able to meet demand and Europe thus risks losing market share to the benefit of the US. the Vinitaly Nomisma Wine Monitor Observatory (source: estimates on customs data), estimates that in 2019 Italy will close its sales to the US by growing by about 5%, for a record price that will touch 1.8 billion euros. This is an incidence of almost 28% on the global export of wines made in Italy. Lastly, the United States recorded the largest increase among the top 5 world markets for Italian wine in the last five years, with a + 38.6% in value. So escape or even an American dream for our cellars?
